I was encouraged by the difference in their ages being similar to the 1871 difference

... yip ... and the rather uncommon surname.  ;D

Looking now to see if there's another family connection in NZ which may give further clues.  ???

Further on George CROXFORD  > >

Just checking another resource ... I see (Wairarapa) George was still on NZ E/rolls in 1893 and 1896.

1893 - Wairarapa E/roll

CROXFORD - George - Greytown - labourer

1896 - Wellington E/roll

CROXFORD - George - Sydney Street - Cook*

 *  ... and if I recall correctly, the George CROXFORD who wed Christiana DANIEL in 1862 (St Pancras, London)  gave "cook" as his occupation at that time.

Tried various spellings and found a George COXFORD death in 1897 aged 68. This sort of ties in with his ages in 1851 and 1871.

Might be him. Buried at Karori 23 Aug 1897 aged 71.

Looks to have been baptised at St James Clerkenwell on 15 Aug 1830, born Jun 7, s/o Thomas and Hannah, which fits with 1851 and 1861.

Hi Ian ... always worthwhile trying the "variant spellings".   ;D

Agree George was most likely to have been the son of Thomas CROXFORD and Hannah (nee READING) and baptised at Clerkenwell.

And just a useless tidbit.   :D     The name of Christina CROXFORD appeared in the local newspapers some time after her 1891 death in relation to the auctioning of Jewellery in her estate (and that of a number of other persons).   Noted in the UK records that George CROXFORD's father Thomas, had been a Jeweller.   Maybe Christina had an impressive and/or expensive jewellery collection ?

DANIEL family - to Wellington NZ per "Wild Duck" - sailed from UK 23 September 1868.
Mother , Mary Ann* - 51 years and seven of her children.  [Names and ages given at nzpictures.co.nz (google search) for "Wild Duck" >  a "not secure" link so haven't posted it here. ]
*  Petone Settlers database has Mary Ann as Mrs. Margaret DANIEL (... no wonder we have trouble finding people at times ... )  ;D
