Miss Crannenburg Mansion,Calcutta
« on: Friday 05 February 21 15:30 GMT (UK) »
Hi Folks
I'm helping a friend with her family research, sadly she hasn't got much to go on, she is looking for the birth/baptism of her Great grandmother Miss Crannenburg (she doesn't know her first name), she was born in Mansion, Calcutta around (we are guessing) 1864ish, her daughter Maud Stella Walters was born 1884. We haven't got her birth/baptism details so no idea where she was born, Maud  married in Fort William Old Mission Church, Presidency Bengal (we have this information)
Also looking for the marriage of Miss Crannenburg to William Walters maybe its the same place as Maud was born around 1880'ish
I know its a long shot

Any help with this would be most welcome,
Many thanks for any help in advance
Regards

There was a Cranenburgh family in India at that time with several daughters. I haven't found any marriages to a Walters though.

Cranenburgh, not Crannenburgh.

Indian newspapers on FindMyPast/BNA

There is this baptism on Xmas Day 1882 at Fort William:

Stella Maud Walter (transcribed as Watter) daughter of William Henry Walter, shipping master, and wife Mary Beatrice. Abode Calcutta.

Thanks for the info
I have looked on these sites (but not the newspapers) but will have another look, I did find the baptism for Stella Maud Walter, and sent it to my friend,  with an explanation that people did sometime reverse their names, as yet I haven't heard from her whether she thinks it's the right person, as she has so little to go on she may not be sure.
I will keep searching.
Thanks again

One of the witnesses to the 1904 marriage was W H Walters. William Henry does seem likely.

I would agree with ShaunJ.

In Calcutta, 1907, a William Henry Walters, master mariner, filed an application in respect of an invention, under the Invention and Designs Act 1888.

Whether or not the following was the same chap:

September 19th 1872

Quote
.      Liverpool Police-court, on the 17th Inst, Michael Morgan, a "tailor’s runner, was summoned for assaulting William Henry Walters, a Master Mariner.

As your friend seems to have little info to go by, do you know why she thinks there was a Cranenburgh link?

A William Henry Walters married a Mary Beatrice Faria at St Paul's Cathedral, Calcutta, on 30 September 1878. He full age, she minor. His father noted as William Henry Lindell Walters, her father as George Augustus Faria. Potential red herring being, William's occupation is noted as Hotel Keeper.
