Elizabeth Bottomley MANN arrival in NZ?
« on: Tuesday 09 February 21 02:13 GMT (UK) »
I am researching and writing a short bio for the NZ 1893 Women's Suffrage Petition database and am seeking assistance with the arrival details in NZ only.  I have no family connection.

Name: Elizabeth Bottomley MANN born 1857 Halifax, Yorkshire (West Riding), England to John Mann and Mary Bottomley.

She married William Blake on 22 April 1878 in Waimate, South Canterbury.  They had 11 children born between 1879 and 1899 - all born in Waimate.

Around 1900 the family moved to Wellington.

William died on 21 July 1932 age 83 yrs and Elizabeth died on 9 November 1941 in Lyall Bay, Wellington age 84 yrs (death notice in Evening Post 10 Nov 1941).  Both are buried in Karori cemetery.

I have contacted the Waimate Archives, however they are currently closed for refurbishment until next month.  I have also looked on FamilySearch but not been able to find anything definite as there are a number of Elizabeth Mann's.  There are a number of family trees on Ancestry.  Most of the owners have not accessed their account for some time.  I have contacted one owner but so far have received no response.

Any assistance with arrival details in NZ would be very much appreciated.

Hi TPB

Pretty sure I've found the arrival in NZ of the Elizabeth MANN you seek.

Some of the results which came up initially were a little obscure, but by extending the search back to earlier years in England, sense is able to be made of the New Zealand information.

1871 - Yorkshire - Halifax

MAN [sic]
 - John - 45 - Brick yard labourer
-  Mary - 45 - married
- Elizth B.  MAN - 13 - dau - Worsted spinner
- Emiley [sic] MAN - 11 - dau - Worsted spinner
- Robert Parker MAN - 3 - son - born on British waters
- Fred Sturk* MAN - 0 years - Nephew [image shows age 9 months]
... all born Halifax (except Robert, born at sea).

[ * Only listing found for this  Fred ... it's possible Fred Sturk is a bad transcription of "Frederick" ?   "Emiley"  and  "MAN" - other records give spelling as "Emily" and "MANN" ]

Elizabeth MANN - continued  >

Immigration to Canterbury  :

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-DRN7-HJ?i=28&cc=1609792&personaUrl=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3AFSTJ-NMH

The above 1874 record for an Elizabeth MANN - ex Yorkshire - aged 15 years born circa 1859 appears a little odd on several counts.

*   Whilst the names of this MANN family match with the children on the 1871 ENG census, the ages of Emily and Elizabeth have been changed so that Emily appears the eldest.

Robert's age is about right ... but who is Elizabeth MANN aged 46 a cook/servant born about 1828 ???     Should this be Mary MANN (mother of the children)   ???  [Have still to figure that out . ]
She is near in age to Mary MANN (born circa 1826) but the records for this voyage show her as Elizabeth MANN.

The MANN family group on this voyage of the "Lady Jocelyn" (3 November 1874 from London - arrived Lyttelton 21 January 1875) were "Colonial Nominated Immigrants" (meaning that someone in the colony of NZ had paid all or part of their passage to Canterbury.)

In very faint writing alongside of their passenger listing, the words "Timaru - Anthony Mann - Waimate" can be seen.    There is also a reference code in last column -"Canty/Waimate - 341".
[Note:  Timaru Library may have details of these Nominated Immigrants.  ]

So while that all seems odd, returning to records in Yorkshire, adds some clarification.

Elizabeth MANN family - continued

These birth transcripts (ex FindMyPast)

MANN - Thomas William
Born: 1849  -  3rd Quarter
Reg:  Halifax, Yorks
Mother's maiden name:   BOTTOMLEY
----

MANN - Emily
Born:  1859 - 3rd Quarter
Reg:  Halifax
MMS :   BOTTOMLEY
----

MANN - Elizabeth Bottomley
Born:   1857 - 4TH Quarter

There may have been other children in this family > can't find them in 1861 census ???
Noting that apparent youngest child is Robert MANN > bc 1868 > born at sea (British Waters) ... so family may have been living in another country for some years ??

Elizabeth MANN family - cont'd.

Death notice for Anthony MANN of Timaru :
https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/THD19260929.2.24

Buried at Timaru Cemetery with wife Rose Harriet.

There is a probate record for Anthony MANN - doesn't give any helpful information other than it mentions his son, John W. MANN who states his father was born in England.

On 1880-81 Electoral roll - Anthony MANN is resident at Waimate.
