Hi all,
Thanks for the hard effort in trying to solve the mystery. Does anyone know any way to obtain more info about John Lowther and his family in Bath? They must be connected to the Lowthers from Westmorland, but how? They were clearly mobile, given that they were in Wiltshire when two of their children died. Also, (unsourced  :-\) family trees give Mary Walter's parents as John and Sarah Walter, if that is any help.
Thanks
Francis

The only way you would be able to confirm a link with the 'northern' Lowthers without further research is to get a DNA test.
When John married in 1786 he was a bachelor.  As you have not located his death which may or may not help you cannot confirm an age for him.

Betty and Henry were both buried at Box after all of those Bath baptisms, as you mentioned it noted they were from Bath.  Also buried at Box 27 Jul 1794 was an Elizabeth Lowther, parents named as James and Mary (of Bath).  I think that you need to be looking at the Lowther (and variants) family in the Box area as although there is no apparent baptism for your John he could be part of the family of an older John & Mary who are baptising and burying children there.

John Lowther married Mary Lee at Box in 1751, they married by Licence.

The only baptism I can see at Box for a Lowther is James in 1752 - parents John & Mary

Lowthers buried at Box
Martha 1771 (parents John & Mary)
Thomas 1772 (parents John & Mary)
Hester 1775 (parents John & Mary)
Mary 1779 (parents John & Mary)

James June 1793 (parents John & Mary)
Betty 1794 (parents John & Mary of Bath)
Elizabeth 1794 (parents James & Mary of Bath)
Henry 1795 (parents John & Mary of Bath)

Ah, I see that John who married Mary Walter was a bachelor :-[. Anyway, I think we can call this closed.
Thanks so much for your help. I'll have a look into the Lowthers of the Box area.
Thanks
Francis  :)

It is possible that the John & Mary (nee Lee) were the parents of your John, they don't seem to have stayed in Box.

There was a baptism of a Elizabeth Lowther at Walcot 12 May 1765, parents John & Mary.  If it is the same J&M then she could be the E Lowther that witnessed your Johns marriage to Mary Walter,

All speculation of course  ::)
