Burial of Soldiers in Cirencester
« on: Wednesday 17 February 21 14:46 GMT (UK) »
Looking at the burial registers of Cirencester about 1644, one is struck by the frequency of entries of soldiers, -  officers  and men, some named but many unknown. Can anyone put forward  an explanation?
Thanks, Toby.

The Book is actually called

Part 1  : The Antient State

Further on in the Book  (Page is no 20) in the book.

On the 21st of January 1642, Prince Rupert marched from Oxford, with five regiments of horfe, his own troop of life-guards and took with him four field-pieces to fecure his march....   .......  the prince turned his thoughts on Cirencefter.......

This day, however, the prince pofted his own regiment, with lieutenant-colonel O'Neal, and a ftrong party of dragons, to keep wtch on on the Cirencefter fide of the caftle....

etc etc.

Spelling in old English.....

Quite a battle took place ..... and says in 1643, the early of Effex beat up the King's quartyers here..... etc. etc.

Thank you Capetown. Civil War period and so Cirencester virtually became a garrison town. Some who had fought, died  there. Others from disease. Seems to tie uo quite nicely. Many thanks. T
