Rats are everywhere!
Bird tables are often a good source of food for them,as at my former home,a wooden bird table posed no problem to a rat  one  day ,got rid of that and got a metal one with thin stand ,but  the  squirrels can manage that so a rat can .
I have stopped putting food in the tray half way up.
Only hanging feeders now.
Viktoria.

Diana - yes sadly as Viktoria says apparently you’re never more than a metre away!
Living in the countryside too they come off the fields in the winter to find warm places to live and looking for food... our Nextdoor neighbour likes to live in a wilderness ... his garden is overgrown... or was .. this of course along with him putting birdseed on the ground in vast quantities encourages them!
Not seen any this winter but then not been out and about much!

Apparently our rats (same species I would think) tend to stick to cities, especially around restaurant bins and docks.
We drove past our park just down the road today, certainly infested with Canada Geese, somehow they survive the cold.
