In the 1851 census he is living with his wife, and his 4 children:

In the 1861 census he is living with his wife, and his 5 children:

In the 1871 census he is living with his wife and his son, John:

From the census it appears he was born in 1813.

He died in 1880:

Unfortunate he married too early in the year to be able to get a certificate showing fathers name.

You could look for possible siblings born same place around the same time and see if that leads anywhere.

I did try to find other Birkett's from Skelwith but with no luck! I'll keep trying....
