I would say keep an open mind, I don't know anything about the company but it could be they have tried to get loans and been refused, it could be it was either this or close the business.
If that is the case it might be better for the staff than have the company collapse and put them out of work.

OK - I see the "2 sides to a story" - just REALLY hope that at the end of it, the employees are NOT the losers  :-X

Certainly different.  I didn't like the thought of employees being "threatened" if they didn't. My employment law is well out of date - but "Constructive dismissal" came straight to mind.

Years ago, I worked temporarily for a firm.  In the days when you literally had a card with stamps for NI contributions.  When I left the firm, there were fewer stamps on the card than when I handed it in.  Took me quite a while to get that one sorted!
