Seminary in Cork City - Which Regular Order?
« on: Monday 01 March 21 19:47 GMT (UK) »
I have a family member who attended a seminary in Cork in the 1950s.  A seminary for a regular order, not a diocesan seminary.
Anyone know what order or orders had such a seminary in Cork at that time?
Thanks!

Might be something here-
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Catholic_seminaries#Ireland

Interesting list, but I don't see a relevant one in Cork  :(

Interesting list, but I don't see a relevant one in Cork  :(

St Vincent’s Seminary, Cork once trained priests, later became a secondary school.
St Finbarr's College, Farranferris, Cork, was the minor seminary for the Diocese of Cork and Ross, it closed in 2006.
St Joseph's Seminary, Blackrock Rd, Cork. The original seminary of the Society of the African Missions, later transferred to Dromantine House.
Castlemartyr, Co. Cork, in 1930, had a Discalced Carmelite juniorate. It closed in 1996 and is now a hotel.
Carmelite Friary Kinsale Co. Cork. Became a novitiate for the Irish Province of the Carmelites in 1917, moving to the existing Friary from Dublin in 1917. In 2003, due to dwindling numbers of novices, it was re-purposed as a Retreat and Spirituality Centre.

Just a suggestion -  If this person has passed away and if you have access to newspaper obituaries
it would definitely have a reference to the order to which they belonged.

That might solve your query

Mystery solved!
It was the SMA order in Cork city.
The Wiki list actually confused me, as if you follow articles around they seemed to indicate that the SMA transferred to Dromatine House in Co. Down in the 1920s or 30s, which was way too early.

[Not a reflection on Aghadowey's helpful contribution].

That's great.   It is good when you can solve things.
