A confusing pair - Betty and Mary Brownrigg?
« on: Tuesday 02 March 21 13:35 GMT (UK) »
I have never been able to find a marriage for my ancestors Jonathan Nicholson and his wife Elizabeth (or "Betty" as she was known). Their first child was born in 1821 so they probably married around 1820-ish. Betty's mother was called Mary Brownrigg, I have this information from the 1851 census:

1851 census: Askham, West Ward
Jonathan Nicholson, Head, Married, 61, Waller (Retired)
Elizabeth Nicholson, Wife, Married, 65, Waller's wife, born Greystoke (b.1786)
Mary Brownrigg, Mother in law, Widow, 85, Pauper Lodger, born Martindale(?)
(b.1766)
William Bateman, Lodger, Unmarried, 63, Waller

I have been unable to find a 1786 baptism at Greystoke for an Elizabeth or Betty Brownrigg. There is a marriage between Mary Winder and James Brownrigg on 20 Nov 1788 at Matterdale, however. Could it be possible that Mary had been married before? Should I really be looking for a Betty Winder?

Added:

I've just noticed that there is a Thomas Winder (b.1809 in Askham) who was living with Jonathan and Betty in 1861. So the Winder connection may be more plausible than I originally thought.

Not sure if this is of any help or not. On FreeREG there are 3 deaths for Brownrigg all living at Gills Row Greystoke; Thomas Brownrigg buried 29/3/1806 aged 80 years, Rose Hilda Brownrigg buried 8/1/1807 aged 17 years (maybe a granddaughter) Matterdale, Greystoke and finally Elizabeth Brownrigg buried 3/2/1808 Greystoke presumably wife of Thomas as they were both living at Gills Row. On the 1841 census there is also another Brownrigg family John, Elizabeth and Thomas who is 25 years, allowing for the rounding they did in 1841. Didn't manage to find a marriage for Jonathan and Elizabeth.
Regards.

Thank you paco, those Brownriggs are worth looking into so I’ve made a note. I really am stumped until I can find Jonathan and Elizabeth’s marriage  ;D

In 1861 and 1871, Elizabeth's birthplace was "Grisdale, Cumberland". Does anyone know where this is? Not sure why I haven't noticed this before.

There is a baptism for Betty Winder, the daughter of Mary Winder, on 5 February 1786 in Mungrisdale

I’m leaning towards Mungrisdale, Ruskie. I suppose Elizabeth could have been born to Mary Winder in 1786, a single woman, who then married James Brownrigg in 1788. So Brownrigg would have been her stepfather’s name, not her maiden name.

I would have thought it referred to Mungrisdale, which is not far from Greystoke.  There were a lot of Quakers in the area and a meeting house at Mosedale, not far from Mungrisdale. Could she have been a quaker?
