1851 lookup Shoreditch - SADLER / WINTER

Is anyone able to assist with 1851 lookups for the following names please?

I do not have much detail to go on but know this couple were married in July 1851 St Leonards, Shoreditch, so am only assuming one or both may have lived in the vicinity when the census was taken.

ELIZABETH SADLER

Would assume they would be in their 20s when married.

Do you have a copy of the marriage certificate for Daniel Winter & Elizabeth Sadler ?
Sept. ¼  1851 Shoreditch  II  477

This would help as it would give (hopefully) an age, even if it is only "of full age,  an occupation for Daniel, father's names, & (again hopefully) an address for either of them.

At the moment, on the info you have given, I have found that there is an 1851 census entry for Elizabeth Sadler in Bethnal Green aged 24.  I am still chasing Daniel.

Further to my last post, I have found that there were 20 Winter families living in the Bethnal Green area in the 1851 census.  Unfortunately this is a surname only index which means all entries have to be checked for Christian names

HO107/1533 4 entries
HO107/1534  6 entries
Ho107/1535 4 entries
HO107/1536  2 entires
HO1071537  4 entries.

I checked them all but there was none by the name of Daniel, also there were no Daniel Winters in the full name index for Shoreditch.

There was also no Sadler families in Shoreditch or Bethnal Green.  The one I mentioned in my last post was a entered incorrectly.

The only Daniel Winters I have found in the overall London index is for a Solder age 20 born Norfolk  in HO107/1588  Greenwich

St Leonards church, Shoreditch has quite a large catchment area which could take in Hackney, the City of London, St Lukes & even Islington as well as Bethnal Green & Shoreditch, so this is a large area to search without more info, I'm afraid.

Many thanks for your efforts.  Unfortunately I do not have any further details on their marriage - only found that last night on the IGI.
The Daniel Winter aged 20 (Soldier) could well be the right Daniel!  He was in the army I believe because by the time their daughter was born in 1854 they were in Bermuda.
Presumably he is shown at Barracks in Woolwich then?
As for Elizabeth Sadler - I have no further details.  Perhaps the one you found aged 24 is the correct one.  Did that give any details of family or was she alone/lodging?

The entry I found for Elizabeth Sadler in Bethnal Green was incorrect, I'm sorry to say I misread the entry. & there were no entries for her in either Shoreditch or Bethnal Green census indexes,  I think obtaining the marriage cert is your best bet to solving this problem as you will then have their father's names.

Daniel Winter age 26  Gunner & Driver 10th B.Royal Artillery
born Norfolk, Norwich.

The index stated his age to be 20 but looking at the image I am sure it is 26, & have found

Daniel Winter  bapt. circa 1824, Sprowston, Norfolk   (Sprowston is a suburb of Norwich), no parents were shown as this was entered by a member of the Mormons.

If Daniel retired from the Army his Attestation papers will together with his discharge papers in the WD section of the Army records at the main RO at Kew, Ruskin Avenue, Kew, Richmond, TW9  4DU.  email.. enquiry.pro.rd.kew@gtnet.gov.uk.
These papers will contain records of his service & a description of him, if he rec'd a pension this will have been paid thro' the Royal Chelsea Hospital, records will be available at Kew.

Thanks very much for the extra info.  I know Daniel Winter died in Bermuda but not sure of the date.

Hello, everyone,

I have checked the piece nos & folios for St. George in the East that Sylviaan posted.

There was only one Elizabeth SADDLER shown in HO107/1548  folio 256 but she was a widow aged 40, charwoman born  Dorchester, Dorsetshire.

I should have mentioned re. Daniel's army service, that if he died whilst still in the army his attestation papers would have been destroyed.
