Buttevant is in the county of Cork, Templemore is not.

The depot of the 43rd moved to Templemore later in 1852 and was there at the end of the year. Presumably its return of regimental births for the year was made from there.

Thanks ShaunJ & heywood, this John Phillips is very elusive, he is with his family, wife Emma brn North Cray Kent & 3 children in Hulme Manchester in the 1891 census and then disappears from view, I cannot find any definite record for him & his wife Emma after that time. The children end up with their grandmothers 2nd husband a Thomas Hamer.

in the family bible his birth date in 20th May 1852

There was a John Phillips with that birthdate working for the Great Western Railway at Llanelly Station in 1875. Occupation "steam crane".

Thanks ShaunJ, I can’t see that this John can be the same as the John born in Cork, is there any record of his birthplace, I’ve looked on the 1871 census but nothing found.

No more information on the Llanelly man. Probably just coincidence. It certainly can't be the John Phillips born in Cork who was in the 8th Hussars.

Thanks heywood, I have settled on this as his death, but not ordered certificate yet, the date would fit in as I cannot find him in the 1901 census, but he’s in the 1891 census with Emma his wife and the children. However I cannot find Emma Phillips in the 1901 census anywhere.
