He can be serving abroad, but I thought the family was usually left behind...

Have got some of his records on Ancestry, but no success with overseas births.

Oops, ignore all the notes, it was only the last entry that's relevant.

James William Charles Bell is in the Forces War records,  I don't subscribe but it says in 1945 he was on HMS Spartiate.

Thanks for doing all that work.

I have James William Charles Bell as born in Portsea in 1896, and died in Southampton in 1967.  His wife, Lilian Gertrude B Bell (who first married Alfred Luke) was born in Winchester in 1897 and died in Southampton in 1987.

For the project that I am doing, amongst other things, I am trying to find the birth places of the participants, so I rather want Lilian to come from Malta as that widens the countries that people were born in.  But I would like some proof other than the name Melita.

For another family, in the 1901 census the girl was born in Portugal and her brother in Bermuda. No problem finding his birth record, but no hint of her.  It is her birth I am interested in.

Some families stay in the same place for generations, other hop around all over the world.

Hi,

This looks like Lilian's baptism, but the introduction to this info says "The names of persons on this Index have been gathered at random from a variety of sources" so I haven't seen the original,

Lillian Elizabeth Melita BELL, baptised 8th September 1929, the daughter of Lilian Gertrude Beatrice and James William Charles BELL, Regulating Petty Officer.

https://web.archive.org/web/20180430162518/http://website.lineone.net/~stephaniebidmead/navy0079.htm

This looks like Lilian Snr. going to Malta in 1925, with the LUKE/DRAPER children (as BELL) and James BELL b.1924,

Ship: MULBERA
Departure:  28 Mar 1925
Port of Departure:  London
Bound for:  Calcutta

Last Address in UK:  131 Priory Rd. Southm
Destination Port:  Malta
BELL
Mrs Lilian     28
Jocelyn          5
Alfred             2
James            6m

and coming home,

Ship:  T.S.S. HOBSON'S BAY
Port of Arrival:  Southampton
Date of Arrival:  254th September 1932
Port of Embarkation:  Malta

Address:  241 Manor Rd, Bitterne Park, Southampton
BELL
Mrs Lilian    34
James           7
Reginald       5
Lilian             2

But I can't find Lilian Snr. coming home for the birth of Reginald in 1926, or returning to Malta, nor can I find the LUKE/DRAPER/BELL children returning home.

Regards,
Daisy
