Many were marked "N" - an idiosyncrasy in the way census could be filled in dependant on who was the informant - this seems to be a rooming house/railway rooming house or equivalent, so not uncommon the way it was filled in  - the immigration date would be way off as well -

The 1900 US census quotes a birth date of Oct 1857 which would be real/correct for Bruce McInnes,

Bruce Mc Innes - Birth Date 30 Oct 1857
Baptism Date 28 Mar 1858Saint Luke Old Street, Finsbury, London.
Father John Mc Innes - Mother Mary Ann

Its really the claim that Bruce McInnes died in London in 1894 that is the issue with this one  :-\
