Sullivan family Skibbereen Market Street/ Crookhaven Cork
« on: Sunday 14 March 21 19:51 GMT (UK) »
I am looking to find more about my family tree. The Sullivan family lived in Skibbereen on Market Street in 1901 according to the census record and in 1911. The head of family was Denis Sullivan, who was in the 1901 census was said to have been 40. He married a lady called Ellen Crowley who was 37. Ellen Crowley was from Leap. They had approx. 9 children:

William born in 1880- No children
Mary Ellen born in 18820- was single in 1911 and moved to Crookhaven as stated in the 1911 census and lived 6 houses away from her sister Kate
Kate (cant find her birth certificate online) who later marries Jeremiah Driscoll in 1909 and moves to Crookhaven and had 8 children
Bridget born 1889- married a man Morris who was a soldier during 1914-1918 in Ballincolliq at the Barrack
Michael born 1891- no children
Johanna born 1894- I think this lady was also known as Hannah, who married an O'Mahoney and had two children, Ellen who lived in London and married a man from Trinidad and had 4 children with the surname Rostant/Rostent. The second child was called Mary and had 2/ 3 children.
Christina/Christine born 1896- married Frank Bass who was from Gentry. He and his father had a solicitor company called Basses Solicitors which was in Rochrohane in Carigrohane. They had no children.
Agnes born 1898- Marries Thomas Butcher in 1921 in Ballincolliq, Thomas' father was called George. The marriage was in the presence of Timothy O'Sullivan (who I believe to be a brother of Denis) and her sister Christina. Tom Butcher apparently moved to Australia and then later lived in Yorkshire. Agnes had 2 daughters called Betty and Winifred. Tom Butcher the husband of Agnes he was an English soldier.
Louisa born 1902.

In the 1911 census there is a grandchild in the house called Annie but I do not know whose child she is. It also says in the 1911 census that there was a total of 11 children born and 9 are still living, I do not know the 2 children's names who passed away.

If anybody can help with any further information that would be appreciated as I do not know anything else about the family other than what I have written. Thank you

A relation of the family is a lady called 'Cissy' who is apparently one of Denis' children but I do not know which one as Cissy is not mentioned in either of the 1901/11 census. Cissy married John Gilbertson (English soldier), had one child called Ann Gilbertson marries John Folly. Cissy apparently moved to Baltimore or lived there. She also remarried as John died. She married to Mick O'Donaghue, and had 5 children with Mick.

'Cissy' is usually a nickname- sometimes for Cecilia/Celia but probably more often a nickname of 'sister.'
There's a marriage for a John Gilbertson, baker, to Mary Sullivan in Skibbereen (father Denis Sullivan)-

Thank you, really appreciate that.

Have you got an information on the granddaughter Annie in 1911. I’m not sure whose daughter of Denis’ she could be?

I also know that Kate, one of her children was a girl called Mary, who was the second oldest I think. She was registered in the Schull area of Cork, again, I think. I can’t find a death certificate for her and don’t seem to have ever heard about her so I don’t know what happened to her

Thank you for that information, I’ve had a look at it and that clarifies things. I thought Mary had moved by Kate but clearly not, must have been another Mary Sullivan in 1911 in Crookhaven.

Have you got any other information you can provide about any of the children that was born, that would have been Denis’ granddaughters and grandsons?

Also, have you got any information or how I can find out who was Denis’ parents?

I found Denis’ death certificate last night, 1930, Christine Bass was present, would have been 73. Do you know where he would have been buried?

I honestly really do appreciate all the help, so thank you very much
