George Barnett
« on: Wednesday 17 March 21 02:42 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Hope I’m on the right board with this question.

I posted on here about 10 years ago about my great grandfather and I’m still no further with him.

The info I do know is that on the 1901 census it says he was born in Tunbridge Wells in 1867. I cannot find any record of his birth.

Facts that I do know is that he was at sea before his marriage to Alice Bright in 1890 and presume that he is still at sea in 1891 as I cannot find him on the census, I can only find Alice.

On there marriage certificate his father is also names as George Barnett deceased Coastguard.

My grandfather was also George Barnett and his brothers all moved to London as young men for work

I am hoping that the above info may connect to someone’s tree and that I will be able to take this side of my family back further

Thank you for info that someone may have

Regards

Linda (nee Barnett)

Wife Alice and children Iva (1895), George (1897), William (1898), Jack (1900), Alice May (1902), Levi (1904), Walter (1909) and Albert Edward (1910).

In 1867 it wouldn't have been compulsory to register a child's birth.  It may be that for whatever reason his wasn't registered.

Thank you for your replies, I thought it was compulsory by 1867 to register births so that was a surprise to me. Well not sure what search I done that was different to the last 10 years but early hours of this morning I found a baptism for a George Barnett 1867 Tunbridge Wells and father is George Barnett, mother is Lucy Barnett. I did have a quick search but I have not been able to find any more as yet to this George and Lucy but I have a good feeling about this one so 🤞.

A possible marriage for the parents.

Marriages Mar 1842
BARNETT    George        Sevenoaks    5   397
COLLINS    Lucy        Sevenoaks    5   397

25 years before George jnr is born in 1867

There is an image of this marriage on Find My Past.  Shows George of full age, i.e. over 21 but Lucy is a minor.  George's father  is Peter Barnett labourer.

Just bear it in mind in view of when they married.

Added: Brasted is covered by the Sevenoaks registration district.

This looks like George and Lucy in the 1851 census living here Lorkings Cottage, Hever, Sevenoaks, Kent

Hever is the place of residence on their marriage certificate.

Four sons, Michael, Peter, John and Isaac.

I think a bit of caution is needed here.  I have found the family in the 1861 census living here:-

Brook House, Toys Hill, Brasted, Sevenoaks, Kent

Parents George and Lucy - George's occupation is Agricultural Labourer.  Not one that would be consistent with being a coastguard.

Children listed are Charlotte, Michael, Peter, Isaac, John, Stephen and George.  George's birthplace is given as Brasted, Kent.

Registration district   Sevenoaks
Enumeration district   15
Archive reference   RG09
Piece number   489
Folio   35
Page   24

This appears to be George's birth registration:-

BARNETT, GEORGE       COLLINS
GRO Reference: 1857  S Quarter in SEVENOAKS UNION  Volume 02A  Page 363

This birth is ten years earlier than the baptism.  So is he your George?  Was George telling porkies about his age or is this one the wrong one?
