Edwin HANCOCK, born c1844/45, Almondsbury (?)
« on: Thursday 18 March 21 14:32 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I am trying to establish birth/parental/sibling details for Edwin HANCOCK.

He spent a large portion of his life imprisoned and the only definitive details I have uncovered, other than all his prison information, is that (a) his father was William HANCOCK living at 5 Avon Place, Temple Back, Bristol in approximately 1860 and (b) that the 1871 England Census enumerated at Brixton Prison (RG10/691/45, p.5) confirms his birthplace.

Hopefully someone may be able to help.

Thank you,

BAC3

Have you carried out the basic searches on familysearch?
on www.gro.gov.uk for his birth registration?

1871 England Census enumerated at Brixton Prison (RG10/691/45, p.5) confirms his birthplace.

What are  the other pieces of evidence for a birthplace if the 1871 "confirms" it?

The GRO was negative, although could be my inept searching, and Almondsbury bordering Bristol seemed acceptable as specific and distinct from Bristol being cited elsewhere in prison documents.

I've checked the 1861 census for Avon Place, (Gloucestershire, Bristol Temple, District 21 - no sign of William HANCOCK)

Checked the Almondsbury Baptisms (on Ancestry) from 1841 til 1851 - No Hancock baptisms.

Edwin appears to have missed the census' as he was in Prison.

???

Have you found Edwin HANCOCK born 1845 - 1871 onwards (after he left Prison)

Capetown,

Thank you for your post.

He was released early from Parkhurst Prison (Ticket of Leave) on 15/10/1874 and, similarly, as with his birth etc. I can find no further mention.

on one of the documents from Edwin's prison records, his date of birth is noted as 23 March 1844.  Also, there's a note about his mother dying of smallpox when Edwin was about 9 years old, no name given for her. 1868 record has father William, a carpenter, address Harris's Yard, Temple Backs, Bristol.

This 1851 has a Philip Hancock, blacksmith living in Harris's Yard

By 1861 daughter Mary has married Mr. Sully and Philip is John

So no Edwin, wrong first name & occupation, but in right area.

just found Mary Ann Hancock's marriage in 1853, she married Edwin Sully.

Too much of a coincidence with the names?

Thank you osprey,

I missed those particular references on his convict documentation.........his mother's death, however, given it possibly occurred in 1853 does allow me to search further.   Between 1851 and 1855 there were five deaths in Bristol of females named HANCOCK, four of whom died in infancy and the other aged 10 ::)

it was written sideways in the margin on the page where Edwin was asked about what diseases he'd had - he also had smallpox.
