What I said about trees ... some have an Alfred Henry Granger married to Edith Hannah SMYTHEMAN.  Yet the two men have the same birth date.

No wonder Pothunter is confused.

Ooh, that article does swing it slightly back into the realms of possibility that he is "ours".

I've got a baptism record for Henry James Joshua Granger in Durban on 11 Feb 1877 showing DoB as 3 Jan 1877.  https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QVS4-1QQN

Length of time between birth date and baptism make it extremely unlikely he was born anywhere other than Durban.

Henry's parents were both British (Joshua born in Leeds and Margaret Burns born in Isle of Wight).

There was an older brother (George Joshua) born in Durban in 1871 (although died 1.5 hours later unfortunately).  Six younger siblings all born in Durban too.  The surviving siblings all remained in South Africa.  The siblings were: George Joshua, Percival John, Edgar William, Ellen Maud, Ernest Uttley, Ida Daisy and Sydney Herbert.

I agree Minnie, I also think getting the Marriage Printout would be better, as Henry was alive then, and signed it, the Death Printout is also a back up, but it depends what the informant knew.
