mmn Brownson

If he was the Arthur William Montague who died in 1930 aged 62, he also used the names John Brown and Arthur Williams per the probate calendar.

Hi Shaun J

I saw that info somewhere but decided it couldnt possibly be the correct one because Amelia Montague was listed as widowed on the 1911 census living back in Leicester with her father
I still need to find a more suitable death year for my Arthur W but have so far drawn a blank

Thanks, SC

His wife  might have  assumed  his death  perhaps  because  he  might have disappeared, I dispensed with the death 1930  because  she was shown as  a widow  on 1911, he  seemed to be about the  right  age  in the right area perhaps  he  is  your man.

Hi louisa maud

I suppose it is possible if he were the one who maybe was in the Navy
an appointment to something in 1886 was mentioned earlier in the thread
the 1866 one would be 20
thinking about it there was also no info on him in the announcement of the wedding from the Southampton paper which might be of significance
lots of food for thought here

The 1886 navy reference is a red herring. It's wrong.  It stems from a typo in the London Evening Standard.

The correct announcement (per the Army and Navy Gazette) was "Arthur W. Carter and Montague G. Cartwright to the Excellent, for short course of torpedo and gunnery, and then to Cambridge for gunnery".  The Standard garbled this to "Arthur W. Montague J. Cartwright, to the Excellent"

The most likely appears to be Arthur W MONTAGUE born 1866 at Brentford, mmn BROWNSON. He was baptised Arthur William at Southwark on 13 March 1867, parents Henry (gentleman) and Elizabeth, of 6 Grosvenor Place

The father was Henry William Montague per the baptism record.

The 1930 probate record names the Administrator as James Douglas Montague.  His marriage record (filed with his divorce papers) names his father as Henry William Montague.

Hi Shaun

Thanks for clearing up the Navy record
I did find that probate info on FS with the name James Douglas Montague and figured he must be a relative - I also found a poss m for him in 1895
I assume from what you quoted that it was Arthur who got divorced not James ? do we know when?
so perhaps Amelia didnt want anyone in Leicester where she had lots of relatives to know she was divorced in 1911 - less stigma to say you are widowed than divorced- just surmising
