It was only the adults that were rounded down wasn't it, children were supposedly correct?

It's transcribed as Provest on Ancestry, age 11 (Marsh Lane, Preston) which ties in with Ann's 1830 baptism. Looking at the original image, it could be interpreted as either Provost, Provest or Provert.

I can't find anything for Annie other than in the 1861, Cobourg Street, Leeds (now Merrion Way).

Census entries can be unreliable for all sorts of reasons, wrong ages, wrong spellings, wrong birthplaces so take any that at first glance seem wrong with a pinch of salt.

I have an 1841 where the names and ages are completely messed up, children included.

Here's the 1841 family for info

Thomas Provest 40
Jane 40
Edward 15
John 13
Ann 11
James 8

Baptism for Ann 21 Mar 1830 York

If we can't find another Ann or Annie to fit the profile of the lady in 1861 then I think there's a good chance she is yours.

I know this death is before 1861 and off piste but I can't find it on the general register office site to check her age.

Can anyone find it please just to rule her out?

Ann Provost Sep 1846 Wandsworth

Added probably the Ann age 50 in Wandsworth 1841  :(

1851
23 Boar Lane, Leeds, Yorkshire

Ann   PROOST    Serv    U    21    Domestic Servant    Yorkshire,  York

Hi Daisy

Thanks, that's brilliant, I'll check it out in the morning  :)

Out of all the surname variations that particular one didn't appear in my searches.

Best regards.

Steve

Good find Daisy.  We are getting there slowly, she is a tricky one.

I haven't found anything further on Ann, but I've found a little more about Jonathan Wood Firby.

From The London Gazette, he had previously been in partnership with Robert Smalpage, carrying on the business of Undertakers under the name of Smalpage and Firby in Leeds. The partnership was dissolved on 23 July 1849.

The 1851 census shows him at 23 Boar Lane where he was a Hosier & Glover.

From Slater's Commercial Directory of Durham, Northumberland & Yorkshire, 1855, he was a Hatter and Undertaker at 24 Boar Lane, Leeds.

Just building a small picture of where she may have worked and who she worked for.

Thank you, yes I have all that.

They were in Marsh Lane on the 1841 census, minus daughter Amelia who was a female servant in Fishergate.

Ann is the only one of the family that I haven't been able to trace within Preston or Liverpool but it looks like the two records mentioned in Leeds may be her, I just need to confirm them.

I can't find any marriage, death or burial records for her.
