You may end up having to get his records from the Ministry of Defence.  His service number is not absolutely necessary.  As long as you can provide a copy of his death certificate and as much as you know, they should be able to find his records.

Please note that it has to be an actual copy of the death certificate not a photocopy.  I sent for my late father-in-law's records and I remember that about the death certificate.

I don’t know wether it’s worth paying £30 and asking Navy Command Headquarters in Portsmouth. I’ll check your photo now against his. Thanks for your help.

I would agree with Hugh. RN cap badges show a fouled anchor, ie an anchor with a chain. MN cap badges do not.
I checked the limited online MN records for him. Nothing at all.
