Strange that he doesn't seem to be listed in contemporary casualty reports.

Hello Yorklad Question posted on WW2 talk let's see what comes about,I enquired about my Uncle who was
killed in France in 1940 and although we knew he was missing and recorded on the Dunkirk Memorial a lot
of other info was forthcoming which led to the location, time and circumstances of his death including
other information the CWGC had when inquiries were made.

Ruskie - I do not have any medals and I don't know if anyone else has them - I don't have contact with all the cousins but will see if any that I am in contact with know anything. Thanks again.

I hope one of your cousins knows something.  :) I don’t know much about it but presume medals of deceased servicemen would have been sent to NOK. Though entitled to medals I think I am correct in saying that the serviceman still had to apply for/request his own medals. I don’t think they were automatically sent out. The medal’s branch of the MOD will be able to tell you his medal entitlement, if they were claimed, the address they were sent to, and who they were sent to, which you may find useful.

The questions now which has been raised, did he die, or did he abscond??

Further digging may lead to the answer.

Many did of course abscond  as Malky has mentioned but usually for short period's and again usually
it was a matter of an extra day or two while on leave,my Dad was in Italy 1944 to 45 and leave was restricted to rest camps on the Amalfi coast not back to England as even the soldiers of the Great war
had managed,I'm trying to identify how many REME tank recovery units were active in the area at the
time as war diaries although rarely mentioning individual's by name can help,I was looking at the death
of a friends Grandfather a few years back buried in Northern Italy along with two others from his unit on
a certain date, the war diary entry led to the fact that their truck had overturned and all three died as a
result.
