George Roots Games Farm High Easter 1870s Directory
« on: Monday 19 April 21 19:25 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find out what my grandfather's uncle George Roots did at Games Farm High Easter. he is listed in the Trade directory for the 1870s and lived there until his death in 1917.
My grandfather refers to his uncle George in his WW1 diaries in respect of having horses and I would love to know a bit more about what his role was at the farm please.

You will already know that is occ is farmer - employer - on the last 2 census entries which is self explanatory.  I think what you want to know is what kind of a farmer was he?

You may struggle getting that info as any entry will just show farmer.  It would be vey common to have had horses on a farm as they were used for ploughing.

Yes he is listed as a labourer and then a carrier and then later on, as a farmer. How would I know if he owned the farm or was a tenant farmer? I am just trying to drill down a bit. My grandfather stated in his WW1 diaries that he wished that his Uncle George had left him one of his horses! I suspect i will maybe have to find out if he left a Will- it was the fact that he was listed in the Trades section of an 1870s Directory but with no specific trade! Thank you for your help.

George did leave a Will and he was quite wealthy!

The trade directory entry does list his trade - carrier.

As mentioned he left a will so that is an option to get.  It might mention horses.
