« on: Saturday 24 April 21 21:18 BST (UK) »

My feeling is that the word relates to the Deputy Overman beneath, not Jane.
Still don’t know what it says though.

I think it is Deputy Below Overman.

The mark is a tally mark by the person collecting the data from that page for the census statistics.

I agree with BELOW referring to the occupation of the man on the next line.
This “ below” is used again in the same manner 11 lines lower on the same page.
Milligan - Jardine – Glencross – Dinwoodie - Brown: (Dumfriesshire & Kirkcudbrightshire)
Clark – Faulds – Cuthbertson – Bryson – Wilson: (Ayrshire & Renfrewshire)
Neale – Cater – Kinder - Harrison: (Warwickshire & Queensland)
Roberts - Spry: (Cornwall, Middlesex & Queensland)
Munster: (Schleswig-Holstein & Queensland) and Plate: (Braunschweig, Neubruck & Queensland & New York)

'Below' was typically added by clerks in the census office to distinguish between miners working underground and those working on the surface.
