Margin note on PR burial
« on: Sunday 25 April 21 13:15 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Please can you help with this margin note? It is a parish record of a burial in Derbyshire, the man was 25 when he died, local to the area, and I can't find a word online to match this!

I would hazard a guess at "Copied" but I don't really know what that means in this instance.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Parish Register entries were copied into Bishops Transcripts books.  So I too think it could be "copied".

Thank you, both,

I tend to agree. It is a strange page, because it looks like two different people were copying the records from, presumably an original, but on the double page spread, only this one, the third copied by the same clerk (from the handwriting) has this word in the margin. Maybe a clue is that the first two were services performed by the Rector and the third was by the Curate - perhaps he kept his own records! Who knows!

The answer must be what you suggest.

Thank you!

Perhaps if you could tell us who and when, we could look at the register ourselves.  :-\  I do like to see the wider picture.  :)

No problem, just being cautious with screen clips :)

In case the link doesn't work, it's on Ancestry and only needs:

James Moorley, born 1798, died Derbyshire, 1823, to find it. (Aston on Trent).

Fortunately he is one of a kind, not one of many, especially with the unusual spelling of his name (which every site wants to autocorrect).

He died on 5th June 1823, age 25.

Thank you.  Interesting - possibly "copied" because the handwriting is the Vicar's, whilst the Curate conducted the service.

My guess is that only the final record to be copied for the Bishop's Transcript is noted as copied, thus giving a starting point for the next batch.

thank you, two good suggestions. The consensus is confirming that the comment in the margin is not material to the information about the child baptised.

That helps a lot,

Thank you
