On the 1939 the Miranda who becomes Brown has a birth date of 13/12/1912, which changes to 18/12/1918 on the 1939.  She here claims age 27, so birth year of 1915/1916, which is nicely in the middle.
Someone must have told her certain details of her Father (or potential father) as she has the correct name, and then throws in a theatrical connection linking her to her Mother, and to Alfred James Scott Dodd - though he was an 'artiste' not a playwright.  He is dead by 1943 according to some trees on Ancestry, in Australia.

Do I go for the Miranda McGregor to White marriage in 1932, to see who she picks as father and what age she gives?  Will it help in any way?

Still some time to wait for 1921 census.

I’d be happy to cough up for the 1932 marriage certificate. She’d have been a young bride, so the witnesses may be of interest (in addition to other aspects).

Doesn't get us any further, does it?

Would give her birth year as 1912/1913, which agrees with the original 1939 birth date.  Wonder who was looking after her from birth onwards, and why she ended up in Shipley, and did anyone 'give her away'?

Yes I think the true birthdate must be late in 1912, as the evidence in the divorce proceedings was that the child had been born by the time Maidie did panto that year.

I haven’t yet traced a suitable Doris Cooke (witness), but I suppose she might be a clue to Miranda’s upbringing?

Ernest (who was born 2 July 1909) seems to have remarried in Worthing in 1945 to Irene Whitehead, though they were already together at the beginning of the war.

She was working in Sussex in 1931 - we found that earlier.

Can you remind me re the 1931 find? It’s not ringing a bell.
