The 1876 online digitised marriage certificate for Robert Hine WHARTON and Sarah Ann LACEY show her to be a minor, while he is full age.

Mabel may be a daughter of a one of her daughters, being born a full 20 years after her parents marriage.

Looking at a published tree, the first girl seems to be Clara b 1888.
A couple of the children are entered as Wharlton on the registers, Clara being one of them.

Perhaps one of the sons was father and for whatever reason, the child was raised by grandparents.

The birth certificate and marriage certificate would perhaps clarify the matter.

You need to register but it is free to use.
I had to use FreeBMD too- using just a first name to find some children who were transcribed as Wharlton.

Clara Elizabeth 1888 and Jessica 1890 are registered as Wharlton with mother’s name Lacey.
