Dublin Burials - before Glasnevin cemetery opened
« on: Monday 24 May 21 15:36 BST (UK) »
Can anyone suggest where Catholic Burials would have taken place before Glasnevin cemetery opened?
The Horseman family married and had children baptised at St Marys RC.  The family lived in the area of Great Britain Street / Jervis Street.

Thanks

Prior to the establishment of Glasnevin Cemetery in 1828, Irish Catholics were not permitted to have any cemeteries of their own and buried their dead in the grounds of old churchyards and monasteries or in Protestant Churchyards.  https://www.dctrust.ie/about-us/past-and-present.html

Great Britain Street is now Parnell Street. Wolfe Tone Square (formerly St Mary’s Churchyard) was once used as a graveyard for the adjoining St Mary’s Church. https://www.thejournal.ie/wolfe-tone-square-dublin-4513637-Feb2019/

There is a marriage for a Martin Horsman to Jane Giordani in 1806. They were married at St Mary's (COI) . maybe there are burials at the same Church https://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/display-pdf.jsp?pdfName=d-277-1-4-274

Thanks for that useful information.  The info about the former burial ground was very interesting.
Martin H and Jane Giordani are still a mystery as to who Martin was.
At the moment I cant seem to find any Burial records for St Mary's online, although it appears that they still exist.  I suspect that they may solve several mysteries.

Thanks again.
