Are there any clues in local records or relevant census?
Can you find someone of that name - searching Eleanor Styan or   *yan ?

I thought Hyan before reading the other replies, but it could be Hyam with a loop missing.  :)

Is this from the original parish register or the BT's or AT's?

A comparison to the other records may help.

I think Styan.  Or the cross stroke is there for no reason.

Thanks for your replies and kind suggestions.  I went looking for another record and found this one in the Banns register.  Although Hyam/n was a possibility, looking at this second image I'm inclined to think it is Styan.  There is one Eleanor Styan, born Manchester around 1803 which is a possible.

Eleanor is of no great importance really, just trying to link up other possibilities. Hope the attachment shows.

Thanks all for your input - much appreciated.
