I will have to check the censuses to find out roughly how long the Handcock family held the pub

Well Robert Handcock wasn't there long, though the jury is still out on whether Elizabeth was

Those MIs on Family Search for Tanfield have the following:

Robert Handcock of Tanfield died 30 Oct 1862 aged 27 years,
Elizabeth Pringle, formerly wife of above died 7 Nov 1880 aged 41

and Gravestone photos have that headstone in their database
https://www.gravestonephotos.com/public/gravedetails.php?grave=316785

John Pringle (a widower) obtained a licence to marry Elizabeth Handcock, a widow, on 9th March 1867 and they married on 11th March at St Nicholas, Newcastle.

1871 census Piece 4956/folio 19/page 32

John Pringle , age 43 , colliery overman, born Felling
Elizabeth Pringle, wife, age 33, born Tanfield
Jane Pringle, daughter age 17, born Northumberland Wylam
Isabella M Pringle, daughter, age 3, born Tanfield

The elder girl is likely to be from John's first marriage, but Isabella Meggy Pringle's birth was registered in Q4 1867, Durham MMN Stott
So that all seems to add up

Elizabeth's daughter from her first marriage Ann Handcock was visiting her Aunty Isabella Wilson (nee Stott) and her husband Robert Ewart Wilson in Newcastle in 1871 Piece 5085/folio 73/page 27

No idea if Elizabeth kept the pub on after Robert Handcock's death

A tragically young age to die - even in those days.

In the 1871 census do you know where she was living?  The pub passed into the ownership of North Eastern Breweries (although that wouldn't necessarily mean a new licensee) which later became Vaux and was still a Vaux pub when I used to drink there in the 1970s

The reference is  1871 census Piece 4956/folio 19/page 32

and the image shows it was Stackyard Row, village or hamlet of Tanfield Lea, Civil Parish of Tanfield

Never heard of Stackyard Tow but I will try to locate it.  Sounds like she did not stay on in the pub after Robert Handcock died

Not sure which site you have access to for census returns, but e.g. on Ancestry if you look at the image for this household and then go to image 1 in that set (the box just above the film strip of other pages in the set) then you can view the description of the enumeration district. The 1881 census shows this Stackyard Row  as Stack Yard

One or two people have said they think this might be where St Margaret's Drive is now but I get the impression that they were very poor houses so she had probably fallen on hard times.

So just looked at it again on the Norfolk Public Houses site.

All the best  :)

Immediately after Stackyard Row is Shop Square and then Allen Square, you can see the latter here
