Possibilities:

  • He was living elsewhere in England or Wales and has been redacted
  • He was living elsewhere in England or Wales and has been mistranscribed by both FindMyPast and Ancestry
  • He wasn't living in England or Wales
  • He was already in the armed forces as a volunteer, perhaps via the TA aged 17 or lied about his age

I wanted to find his military service but have no idea what he was in.
Sad that he isn't remembered less than 50 years after his death

If you have his full name, his date of birth and £30, you can apply for his service records.

To apply for his service records you need to know whether he was army, navy, or air force. There are different application forms for each branch.

And there is a very long wait for the records to arrive. I waited 8 months for my dad's RAF service a few years ago.

Thank you for your ideas, I hadn't considered being an evacuee as he was so old, hopefully he will show up somewhere. I believe his mother was quite strict so don't think he would join up against her wishes, she wouldn't allow him to modernise her home.

My oldest evacuee (other than mothers with their children) was 37, so anything is possible. She was a childless married woman, staying in her father-in-law's home village in Northants while her husband worked in London.

Thread about Donald from January
https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=842733.0

He was born 18 October 1922, so not quite 17 when the 1939 Register was taken.
Re the electoral registers, can't see the 1947 service register mentioned, but he is listed at 17 Maybank Avenue from 1950 to 1962. Marked up as a service voter throughout.

With respect to His Service Record, it might be worthwhile contacting the Colchester Branch of the British Legion, to enquire if Donald was a Member, and if so, do They hold any information on Him.
