father's occupation/deceased on marriage cert.
« on: Saturday 03 July 21 18:56 BST (UK) »
Afternoon  experienced Rootchatters,

I'm wondering if on a marriage cert,
if in the box for the fathers occupation was it always filled in as deceased when he was deceased or have you come across with any filled in with just their occupation in it even though he was deceased? I have got one ( another ancestor with occupation & deceased written under it)

In others I have double crossed referenced & they are deceased but with this one I'm not so sure. The marriage took place in 1881 & I cant find the father in the census of that year & beyond & I think I have found him dead in the year 1877 also I have found the father stating himself as one occupation but  on this marriage cert his son has put himself as another!!
I hope this make sense!!
I am either going down the wrong route but don't think i am or he did have 2 occupations & the one was a better station to put on the census than the other or by the time of the marriage he had succumbed to the 2nd occupation.

The requirement was to state father's name and occupation. There was no requirement to say whether or not he was deceased.

I've found a few examples of brides and grooms 'upgrading' their father's occupation on their marriage certificates.

There are also examples of fathers who are invented, particularly when bride or groom were illegitimate.

I tended to find in the early decades of civil registration that whether the father was deceased or not was rarely stated. I have an ancestors brother who wed in 1845, he said his fathers name and occupation, not stating if he was alive or not, when he had been dead for 14 years by then.

His other son, my direct ancestor put his father's name and occupation, and did not say if he was alive or dead, when he had been dead for 25 years by then.

On the other hand, some clerics simply wrote Deceased for the father, not even troubling to give his name or occupation (St Pancras, Middlesex, in the 1880s is a case in point).

Thank you for everyones replies, you have all confirmed what I thought. I just wanted to make sure I was on the right path. This is the only marriage cert I have where I've believed the father is dead where the others I have states on them he is deceased. It just put a little doubt in my mind.
