Swindon Amateur Bicycle Club
« on: Tuesday 06 July 21 09:40 BST (UK) »
There is an excellent mounted photograph which exists of club members & officials dated 1907. Every person is named which makes it so useful. (It can be seen in Swindon Flickr. Edwardian collection, last page) I wonder if anyone is aware of earlier versions? Thanks for any help. Toby.

Googling on The National Archives - there are a couple of Plans for Cycling Clubs in Swindon.  One dated 1897 -

Additions to Cycle Club, Dixon Street, F Pearce

Reference: G24/760/1632

Held by, Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre

F A PALANDRI - listed on the photograph - there is a Public Members Tree on Ancestry.

Amadio Frank PALANDRI - married in Itlay in 1905 - and had a Son born in Swindon 21 May 1908
(John Dominic PALANDRI) Amadio died in Austrlia ....

1911 census the family are living at 2 Brunel Street, where Amadio was a Fish Monger.

There is also a Public Members Tree on Ancestry for the two BUTTON's on the photograph.

As I was born in Swindon ..... HOOD, who took the photograph - the family lived a few houses down the road from our family.

Many thanks. I shall eventually get to the Swindon library, where  I expect to find lots for there were so many cycling clubs based on Swindon around the turn of the century. Apart from the Swindon Amateur Bicycle Club there were clubs based on  Sanford street, Swindon Ramblers, Swindon Rovers, Bath road Wesleyan, Swindon Park, West Swindon, Swindon Oriel, Swindon Working Men's, Even Swindon United, Central Club, Carriage & Wagon Fitting Shop Cycle Club. Probably more and maybe some were renamed but clearly a very popular pastime and often with headquarters at a pub. I know what happened to lots of those pubs but what about all the trophies, minute books etc? T.
