I have an ancestors who were resident at this address on the 1939 Register.  Would this have been a hotel at this time please?  Any information regarding the address would be helpful.  Thank you very much.

Actual address is 26 Woodland, Bishop Auckland, County Durham.

Currently listed as Pub/bar/nightclub.

The Edge Hotel is situated on the B6282 in the village of Woodland, between Bishop Auckland and Middleton-in-Teesdale. The village of Woodland is on the southern edge of Hamsterley Forest, which is a major attraction for visitors to the area.

The Edge Hotel has been an important part of local life for hundreds of years being the only hostelry in the village it has a loyal local following and has also become a firm favourite for visitors looking for a good pint and great food.

It may have "Hotel" in it's name, but I can't find any room rates?

Hi

It looks like the accommodation is advised as edge apartments as a separate entity to the edge hotel. On the same site.

For once I can call on some research done for my own family tree! Whelans Directory of 1851 lists John Hardy as innkeeper and coal owner. at Edge House. John Hardy was the grandson of I believe  my 5x g grandfather, also named John Hardy. He was joint owner of Craike Scar Colliery, which is shown on the map posted by Jen B. His daughter Hannah Hardy married Jeremiah Dixon of the Cockfield Dixons  who were brewers.(An earlier Jeremiah Dixon who was the Dixon in the name Mason Dixon Line was of that family). In the 1861 census John Hardy is recorded as a coal owner and George Dixon, Jeremiah's brother is shown as the innkeeper. John Hardy died in 1869 and while his widow Jane is recorded at Edge House along with her granddaughter, it is a Thomas Burnip who is recorded as innkeeper.

An earlier directory, that of Parsons and White in 1827, shows John Hardy as coal owner at Edge House and his mother also called Hannah as victualler. My suspicion is from reading the wills of his father and grandfather is that the Edge had been in the hands of the Hardy family for some time. The attached is an interesting piece regarding the  present building's listing.
