I noticed that Emma has no relationship given to the household.
I think she is stated as being 'Daughter of Jno'   :-\

Yes you are correct.  I should have indicated that the relationship is not shown on the transcript which I was looking at on Find My Past.  It is indeed on the image.

All this of course doesn't help bfrance trying to find her Hall family on the 1851.  I couldn't find them no matter what I tried.  One can only assume that they got missed for some reason.

1851 census  23 Henry Street Sheffield
James Downes  49, wife Ann 46 and their children

I read that as ‘Bownes’ and it is transcribed as that.
1851 2339/403/31

Is that the Park district?
There are lots of courts around the street too and terrible writing!

Thanks everyone for looking.

At least it’s clarified that the Emma Hall is from a completely different family.

I still have no clue about the Hall family on the 1851 census. I don’t believe there are any missing or damaged pages in the Sheffield area from the 1851 census. So I suppose the only possibility is that they were missed off for some reason. This seems surprising given that they don’t seem to live a transient life, and that I’m already pretty sure what their address is.

I believe the Downes family are on the correct street in Sheffield. Clearly the Hall family hadn’t moved in to number 23 yet.

What number were they when John Henry Kay was born?

It doesn’t give an exact number on his baptism record from 1849 - it just says “Henry Street” (he was baptised at the same time as Sarah Ann).

When he dies in July 1850, it again just says “Henry Street” with no specific house number.
