John, thank you for the kind words.  The reciprocal help from everyyone on this database is what makes it so helpful. 

As to Lylan being a professional:  She is a housekeeper then a hostess in the 1940 census at an inn located at Fort Bragg.  The mention of her being a "judge" is in relation to a voting precinct--no law degree required.  Prior voter registrations have her being a clerk at the precinct.

Josey, thank you for your input, but she is mentioned as "Mrs Lylan Thomas" in her sister's obit, and as "Mrs. Lylan L Thomas" in the estate notice of James H Thomas.  I'll double check to see if there are any other "Lylan's", with spelling errors, in the area.

You say she is Lylan L Thomas. What I tried to imply was that perhaps she retained the Lovell when she married James Thomas & used the name Lylan Lovell Thomas. so the 'L' of Lovell became her middle initial.  If not, the middle initial may help to find her before she married Mr Lovell.

1940 Lylan Lovell is the plaintiff in a suit against E.E. Keyes in the Superior Court of Mendocino.  There is also another suit involving a Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Lovell--however, Mrs. turns out to be Beulah Lovell who also shows up on the various precinct roles of Mendocino.  So Kenneth Lovell can be ruled out as a possible husband.
