Information on Irvingites aka Catholic Apostolic Church
« on: Saturday 17 July 21 03:30 BST (UK) »
I  have just come across a child baptised in 1836 in St Leonards, Shoreditch with the denomination noted as Irvingite, with the father giving his occupation as a whitesmith. By 1851 Census, father was listed as a priest.
From googling, I have found that this was named after Edward Irving  1792-1834 a deposed presbyterian minister.
Where can I get more information on this branch of the (catholic?) church?

There is quite a bit of information available online. I would think you have searched that already though, so is it something specific you are after?

Thank you for those links - I did look at several of them.
I was trying to get to grips with the transition from whitesmith to priest; married as well.
I can see a trip to the library next week.

I can’t see a problem with white smith/priest and presumably married priests were allowed.

 :) agree with heywood  :D

Even now, Priests often have had a secular career and have married and commenced their  family before training and study for the priesthood.

I think you might be confusing the Catholic Apostolic Church with the Roman Catholic Church? Entirely different denominations.
If you read the bit under Structure and ministries it explains about 'priests'-

Thank you - that clarifies the matter.
Another unusual note for my tree. I am collecting stories around some of these items - well it all adds some colour to my extended family!

Catholic in a religious context means universal. Several Christian denominations are Catholic/catholic. Hence Roman Catholic to differentiate from others which have Catholic in their name or consider their church to be catholic.
