Can anyody enlighten me as to the letters indicated in red on the image? (I'm assuming the one immediately next to it is an ampersand?)

No need for the question mark Nanny Jan it is indeed Royal Horse.

The records of the RHA and the RFA were dealt with by the same record office designated by the two sets of initials with an ampersand.

That particular snippet of the record doesn't tell us which branch he was in though.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,

I checked his RAF record but as is regrettably usually the case, the only things about his service prior to joining the RFC is the date he joined up, 6 Sep 1914, for the duration of the war (D of W) and the dates he was overseas in one or other branches of the Royal Artillery.  His medals were issued by the RAF even though they were gained while he was in the army so we won't find him on the army medal rolls.

It appears that for men who went from the army to the RAF, once the RAF had extracted what they wanted from the  army record, passed over to them by whichever record office were holding them, they destroyed the records.
