Buckreddan Hospital, Kilwinning
« on: Saturday 24 July 21 00:05 BST (UK) »
I'm wondering if someone can help....

While helping another Rootschatter on the Ayrshire forum , I discovered Kilwinning had a maternity hosptial called Buckreddan.
Can anyone tell me if this hospital was ever used as a TB hospital?
My late mother's mother ( my maternal grandmother) died from TB in 1942 - she had been ill for some time before she died. My mum,who was only 6 at the time of her mother's death,  always said her mother had been hospitalised at Buckreddan in Kilwinning.
She had memories of being taken on the bus by other relatives to see her mum - because she was a child she was not allowed into the hospital but recalled being held up at a window to wave into a small woman lying on a bed  :'(

The 1940 valuation roll lists Buckreddan Maternity Home, 15 Irvine Road, Kilwinning.

There is a newspaper report from the 1940s referring to "Kilwinning Sanitorium", which would be the TB hospital, so a different place.

Thanks for this GR2.

I was a bit perplexed when I Googled Buckreddan and found references to it being a maternity home and it certainly looks as if it always was!
Yet, throughout the years my mum always spoke of Buckreddan as being the place her mother spent years being treated for TB.
I have not found any reference online to Kilwinning having a sanitorium.
Hoping someone with local knowledge might be able to help.

The maps show an infectious diseases hospital in Fergushill Road, Kilwinning.

Ayrshire Central Hospital in Irvine was also constructed from 1935 and opened in stages from 1941, with facilities for dealing with TB, maternity, and infectious diseases.

Her death certificate or a newspaper death announcement will give the location of the hospital.

Even the ScotlandsPeople index would show the parish/district of her death.

Thank you GR2 - I will look into the Fergushill Road infectious disease hospital - that sounds like a contender.

I knew about Ayrshire Central ( been there many times  ;D )  but quite sure this was not where my maternal grandmother was hospitalised.

I already have the death certificate. I have had a copy since before my mum passed away. My mum was excited to see it as she had never seen the original.
She expected the place of death to be Buckreddan but was surprised to see that her mother actually died at the home of her own parents ( my mum's maternal grandparents) in Galston.
The certificate is a puzzle. It is signed by the family GP and the cause of death is -
Tuberculosis of the kidney 2 months
General Miliary Tuberculosis 10 days.
My mum was adamant her mother had been suffering TB and hospitalised for 4 years , so the duration of the illness in the certificate shocked her.  Sadly as my mum was only 2 when her mother disappeared from her life and 6 when she died, she had no real memory of her and everything she knew was from what family members told her over the years.

Hi loobylooayr. Ask here:
https://www.threetowners.net/forum/

The three towns are Stevenston, Saltcoats (my home town) and Ardrossan. Many subscribers are very knowledgeable about the area in general. You would be well aware Kilwinning lies between Stevenston and Irvine although there is now a motorway which connects Irvine and Stevenston and bypasses Kilwinning.

Thank you, q98.
I will take a look at this forum for the three towns.
Although I've lived in East Ayrshire all my life, I'm not terribly familiar with Kilwinning.
Used to go on Sunday School Trips to Stevenson  ;D

Thanks again,
Looby :)
