One of the news items mentions the death of Edward POWER's sister in Yorkshire just before the suicide.

Can you confirm that?  It would add to your evidence for confirmation.

Agree with Sue,  here's that cutting.  https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/46639681 Barrier Miner 30 January 1932.   Very sadly, I am assured by my ancient living relatives that this cutting is relating a familiar tragic story from that era.   

also notice that in the following cutting we learn that Edward had been at the camp for 2 months.

Thank you JM, Sue and Matthew for providing so much information and giving the context of this sad story. I've always assumed people emigrated from England to Australia in search of a better life so it's very useful to know the real social history of those times. Checking FreeBMD, Edward's younger sister, Emma Power, did die in 1931. He had also lost his father when he was 4. His poor mother!
