William was a bachelor but Martha was a widow and a minor. I can't read much the handwritten licence apart from her father being dead. The marriage banns say her father was William Lama but that must be false. Can anyone throw some light on this ?

Actual marriage cert image is on Ancestry
Martha is a spinster. Father is William Lama a shipwright.
John Burris is a Brazier.  (William Burris the groom is a Butler)
I've got that. I tried to upload a shot of the licence I found but it doesn't work.

The licence says that the bride is a minor and her mother (a widow) has given consent for the marriage, as the father is dead and there was no other guardian.

Munster: (Schleswig-Holstein & Queensland) and Plate: (Braunschweig, Neubruck & Queensland & New York)

The death of a William Lamey, aged 48, was  registered at Greenwich Union ( which included Deptford from 1837) during  Sep Q 1838. A possibility?  Source GRO Index.

That link says Martha is a spinster and a minor

ADDED The person who is mentioned as a widow is her mother (also named Martha)

Thanks Rosie, I think that solves that. I'm getting too old for this,

Thanks Neale. That sums it up.  So I found a great uncle who went to USA.

This may have no connection to your family, but the Bristol Pollbook of 1830 has a John Burris, brazier, living at Narrow Wine Street.
