May have spoken too soon as the "Stanwix Cottage" on Brampton Road, only 100 metres or so from the "Stanwix Cottage" beside the pub on Church Street, is an equally good candidate and a listed building: "On the 1865 OS map it appears as Stanwix Cottage. (Carlisle Journal: 2 October 1813)".

Attachment is clear that Collyns Simon was a layman not a "prelate" or in orders when he wrote on Church controversies; by 1870, after his honorary LL. D.,  the reviewers of his Hegel article were rude about "Dr. Collyns Simon".

Edinburgh University kindly replied but unfortunately they do not have details of any nominations or speeches for the 1869 award of LL.D.

Again the name is positively COLLYNS, in the Edinburgh Senate minutes.

The T Collyns Simon article (not a full treatment, more a series of references and leads) is now updated at

www.malvernoptics.co.uk/thomas-collyns-simon

with a copy to NIFHS. They are unlikely to print it, being understandably keener on family history advice than on crazed boffins and elephants, but they may spread the word, especially on the Kilwaughter angle. Thanks to all who contributed.
