I would imagine that it means they arranged the burial and paid for it

Re-reading, I now see that Jane was buried in Gainsborough General Cemetery, but, there`s this

Looking on Showmystreet, the Meeting House seems to stand at a right angle to the road.

In the 1920s my aunt had her first job arranged by the "Friends" !

'Buried by friends' is a standard phrase in workhouse registers. It simply means that someone else, other than the parish or union, was responsible for the burial costs.
