If you haven't found Andrew's birth entry so far in the Old Parish Registers, I would suggest that you may not find it. Only about a third of events were registered before the start of official registration in Scotland pre 1855. Even if his birth or christening had been recorded, it could also be that the relevant register has been lost or destroyed over the years. Unfortunately, a common occurence in those times.

He has consisitently stated Dundee to be his birth place and you will likely need to accept this as correct. Pity he hasn't been found in 1841 so far.

Hi Monica, thanks - I did find the census as you said.
Yes this is the brother John who died of stomach cancer.

It is Andrew McCombie's birth record that I most committed to finding one of these days for a friend! I got his marriage cert on SP but it's a dreadful copy and they are unable to rescan it at present due to Covid, Hey ho

Thank you again

Ok, I have given up on finding Andrews birth  :'(

I am gong back trying to find his father John or mother Janet/Jess Scobie's birth or death and where they were living in 1841. The names are just not coming up, trying using name variants, fuzzy matching etc. Can anyone help with what I should add for best chance of a result?

Father: John McComie/McOmie born Rhynd 1797, a weaver
Mother: Janet/Jess Scobie born 1798 in Elliot Head. Daughter of James Scobie
John and Jess married 31 July 1818

Have you tried using wildcards - M*c*o*m*e should produce all the variants.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Back again... ;D
No luck whatsever in finding any more info on either Andrew McCombie.

I can't find birth, deaths or census records of Andrew's parents i.e. John McCombie/McOmbie//McOmbe though he is thought to have been born in 1797 in Rhynd
Nor can I find anything on John's wife Janet (nee Scobie), daughter of James Scobie (from marriage record).
I have scoured SP for these records trying all kinds of wild cards but have drawn a complete blank.
I know John and Janet were dead before Andrew married Jane Ramsay in 1855 in Tealing.
Does anyone have any suggestions of where I might go with this please?

The only reason I am not saying that you have got to the end of the road is that there is always an outside chance that someone will come up with something from a rare stray resource like a family bible turning up on eBay or some such lucky accident.

Basically, unless they owned land or got into trouble with the law or the kirk session, if the record is not on SP it has not survived, even assuming that it ever existed in the first place.
