What is more interesting is how Catherine came to be living in Castlereagh, County Roscommon, Ireland when all of the other Masterson matches that her great-grandson shares DNA with all come from Achill Island, County Mayo, Ireland.

If you do have the right marriage certificate of 1921, as found by Elwyn then you might be interested in the residences of Michael Kelly and Catherine Masterson. Catherine lived in Castlerea, while Michael lived in the townland of Arm on the outskirts of the town.

Catherine was a servant. She may have gone there for work.
My Mayo grandma was a servant, 20 years before Catherine. She worked in Belfast and in 2 counties in England, returning to her father's home at various times, before and after marriage, depending on job prospects and family situations.
Employment opportunities were limited except in cities and large towns. Irish people were accustomed to leaving home for work.
Catherine didn't state her age at marriage. "Full age" is 21 or over.

There are a few possibilities for a Catherine or Kate Masterson on Ireland census 1901 & 1911 who would have been 21 or over in 1921. That's assuming she was in Mayo for either census or even in Ireland. There are some on Achill + one on an island near Achill.

There was no census of Ireland in 1921 because of the War of Independence.

Is this the Masterson/Loftus family you have?

1911

The birth of that Catherine

However her father is a Shoemaker (and farmer in the census) but Catherine’s father, Patrick on her marriage is a Labourer.

Also, similar to Maiden Stone with regard to work, my mother in law, raised close to Achill, was in service in Cloonfad, Roscommon in the 1920s.

Yes, the Masterson/Loftus family in the links is the family in question. As already pointed out by Maiden Stone alot may have happened between 1911 and 1921, it is possible that Patrick may have stopped working as a Shoemaker for whatever reason. It is these things, I will be working toward either proving or disproving.

Many thanks for your assistance Heywood. I don't suppose you are able to find a death for Michael Kelly or Catherine Kelly nee Masterson at all please?

He is described as a shoemaker on his death in 1923
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1923/05043/4380126.pdf

And Ellen is described as a Farmer’s wife on her death in 1935

Unfortunately I can’t see any likely deaths for Michael or Catherine.

There is a birth for Margaret A Kelly 1931 with mother’s  name, Masterson.
It might be the same family.

Thanks. I've just worked out to use this site myself. Every other time I've tried to use Irishgenealogy.ie it hasn't played the game with me.
