Court Marshal
« on: Friday 06 August 21 11:40 BST (UK) »
From military records of Edward HERRINGSHAW can us please help with this entry of his court martial. Being drunk does not seem to warrant being reduced to the ranks.
Where was the Court Martial ?
He was drunk in/on Canteen Fatigues duty. What is that?
The court martial is on two pages on the FindMyPast website.

Canteen fatigues was/is a punishment for a misdemeanour, it was/is also known as being on jankers. So he was already being punished for some offence when he was found to be drunk, the likely punishment for that would be a period of custody either in the guardroom or a regional detention centre.

I took it to mean he was on duty supervising the canteen fatigues, possibly a more serious offence.

Thank you both that makes more sense than being demoted from Sergeant to Private for being drunk in the canteen! Can you see where the court Martial was please?
I have another query about him from his medal record
It seems to say that he is inthe 75th and that he has died its all confusing can anyone work out what exactly it does say. (His brother Thomas was in the 75th and brother John is the entry before his here).
It is sad to see him in this way he was the first of three soldier sons of another soldier .

Please where can I find where the 6th Foot were between 1808 Atestation of the father to 1859 discharge of son John

I think it is over written: Returned Dead Cancelled Sent Jan 17 1861
underneath it seems to say; Serv on now in 75 Foot

He was discharged from the 6th Foot in 1857 is it possible he then joined the 75th? His brother Thomas was in the 75th  How can I find proof of him in the 75 And when and where did he die was he serving?

Does anyone else think the reference about the 75th may infact relate to the previous entry i.e. that for John Herringshaw? I know John was discharged from the 6th in 1861 with very limited vision so  I did not consider him to be the one now in the 75th ???
What was cancelled ? was it the the note "returned dead " or what?  Did that mean he wasn't dead but serving in the 75th?

I really am confused by this piece Help!
