Could a Dead man be listed as the father of a child four years after his death? James Hale death in 1901 and Annie born in 1905?

What about the deceased James' father, ie. James senior (presumably him in the 1911 census return you linked?)? Could it not simply be that Mary and her father-in-law had a child?

Do you have Mary Elizabeth’s birth? What is James’ occupation?

Here is child James b 1901 - father is a Timber measurer
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1901/01944/1751688.pdf

In 1911, James snr is a Timber Measurer.

Annie’s father, James, is described as a labourer.

Maybe, as gaffy says, James snr was the father or perhaps for respectability, the widow gave her husband’s or father in law’s name as the child’s father.

I know of a local woman who produced 3 children after the death of her husband (youngest around 7 years afterwards from memory). There was no question that her husband was dead as his rather gruesome accidental demise was registered and reported in great detail in local newspapers.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Unfortunately, I didn't find Mary Elizabeth's birth. I found a transcript of her baptism record on Irishgeneaology.ie which names James Hale and Mary Kenny as parents but the page hasn't been digitised.
In fact Mary Elizabeth is my G/Father's first wife, sadly she died after just two years of marriage aged just 24.

Both Gaffy's and Heywood's suggestions are quite possible. Guess I will never know.

It is possible if Annie was married at some point to see what name was given as her father on marriage record.

James Hale snr 'Timber measurer' died in 1917 with Annie Brady present at death. (This would seem to be Mary Kenny Hale's sister from the 1911 census) https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1917/05215/4442800.pdf

Thank you for your help
