If his mother is listed as Clara - that was Caroline's sisters name.  As per previous replies she married 1863 & became Clara Harrold & John Starkey is shown as her nephew in 1871.  Could she have been concealing the truth of his birth from her husband??

This most certainly appears to be the case.. and as Caroline already had a child out of wedlock may be she was willing to take responsibility for John? It would explain why and how he mysteriously ended up with Clara (if something happened to Caroline?). Or may be Clara's husband knew and was welcoming (unlikely in my book).

I've started following up Caroline Starkey's on Ancestry by creating new trees, pursuing them one at a time but I haven't found anything so far.

There's a very interesting article and possibly related to daughter Elizabeth published in The Leicestershire Mercury 17th March 1855.
Market Bosworth Petty Sessions 14th March 1855
Caroline Starkey charged Ralph Oldacres
with being the father of her illegitimate child-Order made of 1s 3d a week, and 17s 6d costs.

The dates are a strong possibility. I'll keep searching.

Yep, I can confirm that Elizabeth was Caroline's illegitimate child with Ralph Oldacres. Unfortunately much time has past and I'm no closer to solving this mystery.

Searched newspapers, directories, bmds, parish records, followed up on trees - nothing. Beginning to think this one is lost to time.

All we know for sure is that she was still alive and not married in 1863.

Given this post is nearly 2 years old - I just want to provide an update that I still have no idea as to the whereabouts of Caroline Starkey.

  • Caroline's father Michael died 1881 in Atherstone.
  • Caroline's mother Elizabeth died 1885 in Atherstone.
  • Her brother Benjamin Starkey died 1842 in Twycross.
  • Her sister Clarissa Harold died 1906 in Stoke-on-Trent.
  • Her brother Samuel Starkey died 1905 in Atherstone.
  • Her sister Emma Reid died 1914 in Atherstone.
  • Her sister Ann Tricklebank died 1924 in Tamworth.
  • Her brother William Starkey died 1917 in Essex.

All are accounted for except Caroline, which is extremely frustrating.

Last record I have for her remains 1863.
