What Happened to the Johnson Sisters?
« on: Tuesday 17 August 21 16:34 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I have lost the trail on two Johnson sisters after the 1881 census and would be very grateful of any assistance.

I have Maria Johnson (b.1864 Walkern, Herts) and sister Emily Johnson (b.1871 Walkern, Herts), who are daughters of Kezia and John Johnson.  There are two other sisters Alice and Sarah-Ann, but I have full details for them birth, marriage, death etc.

Maria is last found in the St John district, Hertford on the 1881 census working as a domestic servant for the Peck family, Emily is last found on the 1881 census with her mother Kezia (a widow by then) and another sister in Walkern.

This is where the trail ends for these two, would be great to complete the story for all four sisters.

Thank you.

Logically - they either married or died so have you looked for marriages or deaths for them?  www.freebmd.org.uk

Was Maria born Emma Maria?

Indeed, by the 1891 census Maria could well have married (or died), but thought I should still pick her up on that census with Walkern as birthplace even if her surname had changed and no deaths jumping out within the decade since 1881 census to explain not finding her on the 1891 census.

With Emily she would also be of marital age by the 1891 census but again nothing really jumping out for either marriage or death to explain not finding her on the 1891 census.

Thanks

You cannot always rely on the birthplace as your search criteria.  Using the county is more reliable

Yes, quite agree - I did extend the search criteria out to county and no luck, the girls have dropped off the face of the planet it seems!
