The Native (Bath), Captain Drummond, 1818
« on: Thursday 19 August 21 17:35 BST (UK) »
Hello, I'm interested in finding out what I can about a ship called the Native, with a Captain called Drummond, that sailed from Greenock to Charleston in the late summer of 1818, arriving on September 15th. The newspaper article I have seen says the ship was 'of Bath'.
Can anyone give me any more information about ships in general at this time, or where to look for possible records?
Thanks.

For an explanation of column entries - see front of volume
If you google "Lloyd's registers on line" it will return sites where registers from 1764 onwards can be viewed

'of Bath' probably refers to Bath, Maine, USA which has a tradition of shipbuilding.

Bath, Somerset, is unlikely to have ever had shipping!

It lies on the River Avon, true; but weirs and canals preclude large shipping.

I first found out about it in Lloyd's List, and I also have a newspaper article referring to the journey from Greenock to Charleston in 1818. I'm wondering where I could look next. If by any chance a log or passenger manifest has survived, where would it likely be?
My understanding was that it wasn't necessarily built in Bath, Somerset but maybe could still have been registered there?

Don't think I have ever come across a ship registered at an inland city/town?

Route to the sea is via Bristol - which built a locked (i.e. locks at either end) Floating Harbour to overcome the tidal nature of the River Avon.

Shipping then moved to Avonmouth when the ships of the day became to large to navigate the River.
Horseshoe Bend being the main stumbling block ;D

There are at least four vessels built in Bath, Maine with the name Native of this period.

Ship built 1805
Brig built 1811
Ship built 1811
Schooner built 1811

I first found out about it in Lloyd's List,
So why didn't you declare this in your opening post rather than a reference to a newspaper article?
